There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you step off a boat and onto an island where the sand is as white, and the water is a shade of turquoise that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere so close to Singapore. That was the moment our 4-day, 3-night escape to Club Med Bintan began.
Arriving at Club Med Bintan
After a swift one-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Singapore’s Tanah Merah terminal, we arrived in Bintan, Indonesia. We headed to the Club Med counter, where a friendly GO (Gentle Organiser) greeted us and guided us onto the waiting coach for the short 15-minute ride to the resort. If the humidity doesn’t slap you, it welcomes you, like a warm embrace from a friend you haven’t seen in years.
The Beach, Pool & a Place to Unwind
The sea isn’t a tourist attraction here; it’s a constant companion. The private beach was our daily sanctuary. The sand was so soft it felt like walking on silk, and the water is generally calm for even our youngest to splash around safely. However, do look out for the flag by the beach for any warning about suitability to swim in the sea.
Make sure you bring a nice book to lie down on the deck chairs under the beach hut and just soak in the salty air and warm tropical breeze.
When I needed a moment of quiet, we found the “Zen Corner.” Tucked away near the pool, it’s an adults-only oasis with plush loungers and a serene ambience. It was my friend’s secret weapon for recharging my batteries while their kids were occupied.
The main pool was the vibrant heart of the resort. It wasn’t just a pool; it was a stage for laughter, water aerobics, and afternoon cocktails. It’s where we made friends and where the kids perfected their cannonballs.
Inside the Newly Renovated Rooms
Club Med Bintan has recently unveiled upgraded accommodations, and let me tell you, they are a masterpiece of coastal design. I stayed in a Deluxe ocean view room, and the moment I pushed open the door, the room felt like a deep exhale. The renovation leans into a breezy, contemporary tropical aesthetic, clean lines, natural textures, and a palette borrowed straight from the shoreline: warm sand, ivory, driftwood, seafoam, and a deeper ocean blue in the cushions and throw.
The bed was the centrepiece: a king dressed in crisp white linen, with a woven rattan headboard and soft bedside pendants. It faced the sliding glass doors, so the first thing I saw each morning was the water glowing beyond the palms. There was a low bench for luggage, a slim desk/vanity with a rattan chair, and clever open shelving that made the room feel airy rather than cluttered. The floor was pale wood-look tile, cool underfoot, and the air conditioning was whisper-quiet. Bedside USB ports, a flat-screen TV, a kettle with tea and coffee, and a minibar with complimentary water kept everything easy. It wasn’t the largest room I’ve stayed in, but it was so intelligently laid out that it felt generous.
The bathroom was just as considered: an adjustable panel opens up the basin area, enlarging the room and allowing more flexibility with a walk-in rain shower and a separate WC, good mirror lighting, slippers and bathrobe, and all the small details that make a beach holiday feel effortless.
But the balcony was the real love letter. Sliding doors opened onto a private terrace with two rattan armchairs, a small table, and a daybed-style lounger. I spent every morning there with coffee, watching the light shift from pearl-grey to gold over the South China Sea, and every evening with a glass of wine as the garden turned emerald in the dusk. The view was framed by palms, with the ocean just beyond.
A Family Room Made for Little Sailors
My friends were lucky enough to snag a family room, and the theme stole everyone’s heart immediately.
It was a sailor’s dream—think elegant navy blues, crisp whites, and subtle natural wood accents. The “Sail and Boat” décor. The headboard looked like the hull of a classic wooden yacht, and the real showstopper, the children’s sleeping area.
This cosy corner felt like a cosy cabin on a sailboat under the stars. All the curtains can be drawn around the bed for privacy. This wasn’t just a room; it was a haven that whispered tales of the sea, keeping the kids entertained just by looking at the details. Every morning, we woke up to a panoramic view of the South China Sea, the gentle breeze carrying the scent of salt and adventure.
Kids’ Clubs: The Secret to a Relaxing Family Holiday
The genius of Club Med is their Gentle Organiser (G.O.) team. They are the fairy godparents of family holidays.
Enrolled your little ones in the Mini Club (for ages 4-10), and honestly, they barely looked back. From treasure hunts and trapeze lessons to splash sessions in the pool, they were living their best lives. The fact that they had new best friends within an hour was a relief and a joy.
There are plenty of playrooms and facilities catered to the kids and cared for by the GO, and it’s great for parents to take time out to have some time for themselves and enjoy the facilities in the resort.
For the older kids (ages 11-17), the Teens Club was the ultimate hangout. They have their own dedicated space, far away from the “kids,” where they can play games, do sports, and enjoy the independence of a resort holiday. It gave parents the peace of mind to enjoy their own time, knowing they were safe and having the time of their lives.
Sports & Activities for Every Kind of Traveller
If you are looking for a holiday where you can move your body to your heart’s content, this is it. Club Med Bintan’s sports facilities are top-notch.
We tried our hand at archery & hit the target twice. We played a few rounds of badminton, trapeze and spent hours on the water. Aerial Yoga is also the speciality at the resort; do give it a try.
The snorkelling trip was a standout highlight. There are three scheduled snorkelling trips at 9 am, 11 am and 2 pm daily. Check-in opens one hour before departure, and a compulsory swim test is held about thirty minutes prior. While snorkels, fins, and life vests are provided on board, please note that drinking water and towels are not.
We glided over vibrant coral reefs teeming with exotic fish, the underwater world a silent, colourful symphony.
The water sports centre made it incredibly easy to grab a kayak or a paddleboard, offering endless ways to explore the coastline.
A Spa with a View
At Club Med Bintan, the spa isn’t merely a treatment; it’s a private dialogue with the sea. Each individual spa room is crafted like a secluded glass sanctuary, perched gracefully over the turquoise waters or tucked into the lush tropical canopy with sweeping ocean vistas.
As you recline into your massage, floor-to-ceiling windows erase the boundary between interior calm and the wild, beautiful coastline beyond. The gentle rhythm of the waves becomes your therapy’s soundtrack, while the soft sea breeze, filtered through louvred shutters, mingles with the scent of frangipani and essential oils. Whether you’re gazing at the shimmering midday sun dancing on the water or watching the sky bleed into hues of amber and violet at sunset, the panoramic view transforms every massage or facial into an immersive, soul-stirring escape, where absolute privacy meets nature’s grandest spectacle.
Dining at Club Med Bintan
Mealtimes at Club Med are an event. The main restaurant is a culinary journey around the world. It’s the heart of this familiar feeling. You will learn the geography of the buffet like you know the layout of your own kitchen. The exact spot for the nasi goreng, the station where the omelette chef already knows you prefer yours with just a bit of cheese. It’s a sensory symphony where the spicy sambal and the cool, sweet coconut ice cream don’t clash but converse, a conversation you’ve had many times before and are eager to have again.
If you have kids who can be fussy eaters, the variety was a lifesaver. From freshly made pasta and pizza stations to Asian wok dishes and incredible local seafood, there was something for everyone. My favourite is always the fresh grills, and the food menu changes daily, not forgetting the dessert station serving gelato, crepes, cakes and even macarons.
The Terrace is Club Med Bintan’s alternative restaurant to the main dining room, usually open between meals. If you decide to skip the buffet, you can order from its à la carte menu instead or make reservations for dinner.
But the best part? The open bar or beach bar. There is nothing quite like sipping a chilled virgin mojito (or a classic one!) while watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink.
Evening Entertainment
Every evening, the resort comes alive with entertainment. The G.O.s deliver incredible shows, and the fun continues with a dance party right after.
Our final night was the crescendo of our trip, featuring two experiences we will never forget.
First, we participated in the Turtle Release. The resort works with conservation programs to protect these magnificent creatures. Watching them scurry toward the waves was an emotional and humbling experience. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty of nature, and seeing this made my face light up with wonder; it was priceless.
Later that night, the energy shifted. The resort transformed for the legendary White Party.
The “White Party” at Club Med Bintan is one of the resort’s most popular and magical weekly events, often referred to as the White Night or the White Pool Dinner. It’s a highly anticipated evening where guests and staff dress in all-white for a special poolside BBQ dinner and party.
Dinner was outstanding, offering a diverse array of choices, succulent lamb, fresh crayfish, and flavorful teriyaki chicken bowls. The chocolate lava cake paired with ice cream was an absolute highlight for me.
Everyone dons their best white attire, and the dance floor comes alive under the stars. The G.O.s put on an incredible show, and before we knew it, we were all dancing- parents, kids, grandparents, lost in the rhythm and the joy of the moment. The “Dance Party” was pure, unadulterated fun, a perfect ending to a perfect stay.
We returned home with sandy shoes, full hearts, and a promise to return to this little piece of paradise. If you’re looking for a place where the rooms are beautiful, the activities are endless, and the memories are everlasting.
